Why Everyone Should Go To Counseling

To say this is the most biased blog I’ve ever written would be an understatement. I LOVE counseling. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help from professional counselors like Dr. Dupere in Ocala, FL and  Sylvia Wallace in Lincolnton, NC. Ashley and I currently live in Anderson, SC and we really love what we have gotten to experience from a local professional counselor, Michelle Scott. We want every person to experience the benefit of professional counseling, so let's talk about why you should consider going...

I always say there are two types of people in the world:

  1. People who GO to counseling.

  2. People who NEED TO GO to counseling.

I’m somewhat joking, but I’m not at the same time. The truth I’m trying to suggest is, if we would be honest with ourselves, we ALL have stuff in our lives we need to work on. Personally, I want to always be changing and growing. I don’t want to become stagnant in my growth as a Christian and a human being. In my experience, there have not been many better spaces for that change and growth to happen than the professional counseling room.

The counseling room has become a sacred space for me. It has contained the loudest moments of laughter and the loudest moments of sobbing. Going to counseling has been the ultimate, unbiased mirror in my life. I’ve received counsel from friends and ministers too many times to count in my life, and that will continue, but the counsel I have received from a professional counselor has been so unique compared to the other forms of counsel.

It has been unbiased, as the professional counselor does not know the people in my life like other people I go to for advice. It’s been full of truth and grace. It’s been truly wholistic, which is a BIG deal. For most of my life, the counsel I received was pastoral in nature, which is definitely important counsel. However, most pastoral counseling addresses primarily spiritual issues (and rightfully so because that is what he or she is trained to do) in a person’s life. On the other hand, the professional counseling I have received has been wholistic in that it not only addresses the spiritual aspects of my life, but also the biological, psychological, and the social aspects. We’re not only spiritual beings. There are other parts of ourselves that directly affect our spiritual selves, and those parts need to be dealt with as well in order for complete growth.

I need counseling. You need counseling. We ALL need counseling. Consider finding one today! If you find a good one (and I believe Hopetown is a good option), you will become healthier. Your relationships, your ministry, work, and everything else you come into contact with on a daily basis will become healthier as well.

I’m not asking you to consider something I haven’t done myself. I know these things are true. Not only because I have dedicated years of practice and study to these truths, but I have also have experienced professional counseling done right firsthand, and it’s too good for you not to give it a try.

We'd be honored to serve you at Hopetown. Visit our Counseling Page for more information.
